Mikolich Travels | Fort Worth, Texas

In keeping with tradition, we went on a trip, so I’m writing a blog about it. (Side note, I’ve also created the “mikolich travels” category here on the blog, which coordinates with the #mikolichtravels hashtag on Instagram! It feels good to get organized and have everything under one parent “topic” from here on out, hooray!)

Let’s talk about this trip. It. Was. Rough. With Jim being a daytime engineer and nighttime photographer, haha, sometimes his daytime job includes travel. In those situations, if it’s a location that I like or want to go to, I generally tag along – it works out pretty darn great for both of us. Okay mostly me, but what are you gonna do about it? Well, when this trip came up I was feeling 100% under the weather and only decided to actually go the morning of the trip, as up until them I felt so horrible I wasn’t going to even bother trying to travel. I’m not quite sure what it was that morning that made me say “no, you should just go, what does it change being sick (non-contagious!) here or there”. So, I went, and I’m so so so glad I did.

We landed Sunday night in Dallas/Fort Worth and made our way over to Fort Worth. Finally by about 11:30, we had both been grouchy and hungry and settled for Taco Bell (nothing is open on Sunday nights!) and made our way to the hotel. Fast forward to about 2 hours later, and we were in the emergency room at a nearby hospital because Jim was unlucky enough to be hit with kidney stones. While he’s had them before, nothing can quite prepare you for the pain – and being the person standing idly by and not being able to do anything but drive to the ER and hope the pain is eased quickly is just the worst.

All of Monday and the majority of Tuesday was spent in bed, in the hotel. Jim missed his entire conference he was there for, and just slept with the help of his pain medication that was basically designed to dull the pain and knock you out. My poor, sweet husband.

Tuesday afternoon entailed Jim begging me to let him out of the hotel room, because while he still felt terrible, he didn’t want to just sit in the hotel any longer and needed some fresh air. He seemed to be doing a lot better, and the pain medication seemed to be really helpful, so I obliged and we went to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden which was just around the corner from our hotel. We did a little bit of walking, and a little bit of photo-taking, and according to Jim it was just what he needed to feel a little bit more like a human being again, and I’m so thankful.

I got REALLY excited about this little guy and chased him around for a minute to try and get a good photo. I make no apologies for any of my animal chasing. Ever. (:

The rest of our walk was pretty mellow, we just wandered around the gardens and then went to their Japanese Garden. I’m pretty sure that we could have spent an entire day in all of their gardens, as I’m pretty sure we didn’t even see 25% of everything they had to offer!

Later that night we headed out to grab some comfort food for Jim and a popsicle for dessert from Steel City Pops. If you’re in Fort Worth, Dallas, wherever else they have a Steel City Pops I highly recommend it, they were sooo good!

And with that, we were on our way home early the next day. So, it wasn’t the best trip we’ve ever been on, but I’m glad that Jim was finally feeling ‘okay’ enough to be out and about for a couple hours the night before we left. And, for those who aren’t aware, he’s WAY better now. (:
